Pelvic Floor
What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is the set of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that supports the pelvic and abdominal organs. In addition, it enables the organs in this area to perform their functions correctly. Therefore, it is closely related to continence, sexual and reproductive function, as well as being one of the structures responsible for lumbar stability.
On a daily basis, the pressure exerted on this area can weaken it and lead to symptoms such as incontinence or prolapse. Similarly, some bad habits, including smoking or certain personal circumstances (such as chronic coughing or frequent lifting of weights without taking into account the SP) can aggravate the situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The pelvic floor evaluation includes a detailed medical history, observation of the structures and an intravaginal and/or rectal physical examination to assess muscle function. Prior consent is signed by the patient and always in a respectful and comfortable manner.
It should not be painful and the goal is always to minimize any pain and work within your comfort level.
It is not normal to have chronic or persistent pelvic floor discomfort. However, many people experience temporary discomfort, especially during pregnancy, after childbirth or with aging. If symptoms persist or worsen, pelvic floor physical therapy can help relieve pain and restore normal function.
The time required to see results depends on the type of problem, severity of symptoms and adherence to treatment. In general, you may begin to notice an improvement in your first weeks of treatment if the physiotherapist's recommendations are followed. The complete treatment can last between 6 and 12 weeks, and sometimes we perform control sessions.
No, pelvic floor physical therapy is also very helpful for men. Men may experience pelvic floor problems due to prostate surgery, urinary incontinence or chronic pelvic pain. Physical therapy for men focuses on strengthening and/or relaxing pelvic floor muscles, working on proprioception, improving bladder control and relieving pelvic pain.
A specialized physiotherapist can evaluate your case and offer you a personalized treatment to improve your pelvic health, even without having received a specific guideline from your gynecologist or physician.
